Sulphur dioxide in the flue gas is absorbed in sodium sulphite in a wet spray scrubber column forming sodium bisulphite: $N a_{2} S O_{3} + H_{2} O + S O_{2} \to 2 N a H S O_{3}$ The solution is regenerated by heating the solution to release the sulphur dioxide and then either collected or used in the production of sulphuric acid. The sodium sulphite is returned to the process.
