A region within the Earth’s magnetosphere containing relatively cool, low-energy plasma at a temperature of 2000 K extending to a distance of about 4 Earth radii (25 000 km), bounded by the inner Van Allen Belt. The particles in the plasmasphere are believed to originate in the ionosphere.
