A lobe of ice formed when a valley glacier extends beyond its restraining valley walls and spreads out over the adjacent lowland, or piedmont zone. Much of the glacier surface is therefore at a low altitude and may show rapid ablation. An example is the Malaspina Glacier, Alaska.
