A repeating structural unit, or ‘building block’, of higher plants. For example, in the shoot of a typical dicotyledonous plant a phytomer consists of a single node, the leaf or leaves arising from the node, the adjoining stem segment (internode), and the axillary bud(s) in the leaf axil(s).
