A decommissioned Russian intercontinental ballistic missile converted into a commercial rocket. Named for the Dienper River, the expendable three-stage launch vehicle is operated by its builder ISC Komotras. The first Dnepr-1 booster blasted off from Baikonur Cosmodrome in April 1999 and carried a small UK satellite successfully into low Earth orbit. It has since launched from both Baikonur and Dombarovsky Air Base and been used by spacefaring nations around the world in 21 additional missions (between 2000 and 2015); it has had only one failure, in 2006, when the rocket crashed downrange from Baikonur.
