A lens that is thicker at the edges than at the middle, so that parallel light entering it is diverged away from a point; also known as a negative lens. The view through a diverging lens is upright but appears smaller than in reality. It cannot be used by itself to give a real image that can be captured on a screen, but instead gives a virtual image—one that can be seen only by looking through the lens. See also Converging Lens.
