A space probe built by the US Naval Research Laboratory to test sensors originally developed by the Ballistic Missile Defense Organization for detecting and tracking missiles. It was launched in 1994 January and put into orbit around the Moon, where it mapped the surface at various wavelengths with a set of four cameras. In 1994 May it was put into geocentric orbit, but an intended rendezvous with asteroid Geographos was abandoned when the spacecraft accidentally used up its control gas and the mission ended in 1994 June.

It spent two months surveying the Moon and discovered an enormous crater on the Moon's far side before being sent on to intercept the asteroid Geographos. The mission was abandoned in June 1994 after a faulty thruster failed to shut off during orbital manoeuvres.

Clementine entered an Earth orbit that passed repeatedly through the Van Allen belts, from which the spacecraft continued to transmit data from its sensors.
