The central bank of the People’s Republic of China. It was originally established in 1948 by consolidation of the Huabei Bank, the Beihai Bank, and the Xibei Farmer Bank, and was granted the role of central bank in 1983. Its major functions include formulation and implementation of monetary policy, currency issuance, regulation of financial markets, management of foreign exchange and gold reserves, serving as the fiscal agent for the state, and ensuring operation of the payment systems. The bank is also responsible for drafting and enforcing legislation related to fulfilling its functions.
