  • The last glacial stage in Britain, lasting from around 70 000 years BP (possibly earlier) to about 10 000 years BP. It is approximately synchronous with the Wisconsinian stage in N. America, the Weichselian Glaciation in northern Europe and the Würm Glaciation in the Alps. The Devensian was preceded by the Ipswichian Interglacial, and followed by the Flandrian (i.e. present) Interglacial. Geography
  • The last full glacial series in Britain, lasting from about 70 000 to about 10 000 years bp. During this time, sea levels were 130–160 m below current levels; Ireland was joined to Britain, and Britain to northern Europe and Scandinavia by a broad dry plain. The later part of the Devensian embraces pollen zones 1–111 as defined by Godwin (1940).
