1. (demodulator) A circuit, apparatus, or circuit element that is used in communications to demodulate the received signal, i.e. to extract the signal from a carrier with minimum distortion. A linear detector produces an output proportional to the modulating signal; a square-law detector produces an output proportional to the square of the modulating signal.

2. Any device used to detect the presence of a physical property or phenomenon, such as radiation.
