The area of photonics that is concerned with light interacting with physical systems having lengths of about a nanometre. This type of photonics is strongly subwavelength, i.e. the wavelength of the light is much longer than the length of the physical system being investigated. There is currently great interest in nanophotonics, both for studying light at the nanometre scale and for constructing efficient optical devices. See also nano-optics.
