A bird typically with a strong, curved bill, an upright posture while perching, and clawed feet. Many are brightly coloured. They feed principally on nuts, seeds, buds, and fruit; lories and lorikeets feed on nectar and soft fruits. Parrots are among the most intelligent of birds and some are famed for their ability to imitate, and to some extent understand, human speech. There are 92 genera with more than 390 species forming the family Psittacidae, which is the only family in the order Psittaciformes. Parrots occur throughout the tropics and in some temperate regions of the southern hemisphere.
