theta pinch [`thād·ǝ ´pinch] PLASMA PHYSICS A device for producing a controlled nuclear fusion reaction, in which plasma in a long torus or skinny tube is confined by a magnetic field produced by current-carrying coils, and is shock-heated and compressed by pulses in this field to produce the high temperatures at which fusion reactions take place; the magnetic field is then sustained in order to maintain the plasma confinement. |
