A soft, soapy, white or light-buff to bluish or reddish trioctahedral montmorillonitic clay mineral consisting of hydrous magnesium aluminosilicate and occurring in masses in serpentine and basaltic rocks. Also known as bowlingite; mountain soap; piotine; soapstone.
