A method of studying highly ionized and highly excited atomic states, in which relatively light atoms in a gaseous target are bombarded by highly ionized, fast, heavy projectiles, resulting in single collisions in which the target atoms are raised to very high states of ionization and excitation while incurring relatively small recoil velocities.
