The quantity (x - a )2 + (y - b )2 - r2, where x and y are the coordinates of the point, a and b are the coordinates of the center of the circle, and r is the radius of the circle. 4. For a point, with reference to a sphere, the quantity (x - a )2 + (y - b )2 + (z - c )2 - r2, where x, y, and z are the coordinates of the point; a, b, and c are the coordinates of the center of the sphere; and r is the radius of the sphere.
