negative feedback [`neg·ǝd·iv `fēd´bak] CONTROL SYSTEMS Feedback in which a portion of the output of a circuit, device, or machine is fed back 180° out of phase with the input signal, resulting in a decrease of amplification so as to stabilize the amplification with respect to time or frequency, and a reduction in distortion and noise. Also known as inverse feedback; reverse feedback; stabilized feedback. SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Feedback which tends to reduce the output in a system. |
