A radio-wave interference phenomenon which results in a more or less periodic signal strength variation with height; this specifically refers to interference between direct and surface-reflected waves; maxima or minima in these height-gain curves occur at those elevations at which the direct and reflected waves are exactly in phase or out of phase respectively.
