An electron microscope whose accelerating voltage is on the order of 10⁶ volts, as compared with 40-100 kilovolts for an ordinary electron microscope; it has the advantages of increased specimen penetration, reduced specimen damage, better theoretical resolution, and more efficient dark-field operation.
