One of a group of glycosphingolipids found in neuronal surface membranes and spleen; they contain an N-acyl fatty acid derivative of sphingosine linked to a carbohydrate (glucose or galactose); they also contain N-acetylglucosamine or N- acetylgalactosamine, and N-acetylneuraminic acid.
