A combustible, gaseous mixture of low-molecular- weight paraffin hydrocarbons, generated below the surface of the earth; contains mostly methane and ethane with small amounts of propane, butane, and higher hydrocarbons, and sometimes nitrogen, carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, and helium.
