An order of dicotyledonous plants in the subclass Asteridae, including aster, sunflower, zinnia, lettuce, artichoke, and dandelion; the ovary is inferior, flowers are borne in involucrate, centripetally flowering heads, and the calyx, when present, is modified into a set of scale-, hair-, or bristlelike structures called the pappus.
