An experimental facility based on the hydraulic analogy; the water flows over a smooth horizontal surface and is bounded by vertical walls geometrically similar to the boundaries of the corresponding compressible gas flow; flow patterns are easily observed, and boundary changes may be made rapidly and inexpensively during exploratory studies.
