A disease of humans confined to tropical Africa, caused by the protozoans Trypanosoma gambiense or T. rhodesiense; symptoms include local reaction at the site of the bite, fever, enlargement of adjacent lymph nodes, skin rash, edema, and during the late phase, somnolence and emaciation.
