glass electrode [¦glas i`lek´trōd] PHYSICAL CHEMISTRY An electrode or half cell in which potential measurements are made through a glass membrane, which acts as a cation- exchange membrane; thus, the potential arises from phase-boundary and diffusion potentials which, depending on the composition of the glass, are logarithmic functions of the activity of the cations such as H+, Na+, or K+ of the solutions in which the electrode is immersed. |
