由可以给出孤对电子或多个不定域电子的一定数目的离子或分子（称为配位体，简称配体）和具有接受孤对电子或多个不定域电子的空位的原子或离子（称中心原子）按一定的组成和空间构型所形成的化合物。简称配合物。旧称络合物。由于配合物概念的扩展，2005年，国际纯粹与应用化学联合会推荐的配合物定义是：“任何包含有配位实体的化合物都是配合物。配位实体可以是离子或者中性分子，一个配位实体有一个通常为金属的中心原子，并在中心原子周围有序排布其他原子或基团（配体）。”该定义说明了配合物组成的两个要素：中心原子和配体，但未说明中心原子和配体之间的结合作用。
