较早期指光子级联发射（photon cascade emission）过程，即辐射体（原子、分子、离子）发生两个能态的跃迁辐射后，立即发生往更低能态的另一次跃迁辐射。近期级联发射更多用在描述由数组量子阱结构串联在一起构成的量子级联激光器（quantum cascade laser）。
