发育在第四纪河湖相沉积物上的上部为暗色土层、下部为砂姜层的土壤。在中国土壤分类暂行草案（1978）中和中国第二次土壤普查（1988）时，列为半水成土纲砂姜黑土土类；在中国土类系统分类（1991）中，列为潮湿土土纲正常潮湿土亚纲砂姜黑土土类；在中国土壤系统分类（2001）中，划分成钙积潮湿变性土[注]和砂姜潮湿雏形土[注]；在美国土壤系统分类和世界土壤资源参比基础（2014）中，部分相当于变性土[注]。曾称砂姜土、潜育褐土和青黑土。
