其目的是寻找内在独立的源变量。同主成分分析不同，独立元分析假定了采集的数据是由多个统计独立的非高斯信号源经过某种变换组合而成。但信息源之间往往不具有如高斯分布一样的独立性，即正交特性。因此，采用隐含高斯分布假设的主成分分析不能够将这些独立的信号源有效分离开来。又称独立分量分析、独立成分分析。
