在中国古代产生于宋、发达于明清，以浙东地区为主，讲求经世致用的学术流派。因学人籍贯及活动范围多在宁绍（今宁波绍兴）地区，地处浙江之东部（注：古以钱塘江为界，将浙江分为“浙西”“浙东”，今杭嘉湖地区古为“浙西”，而宁甬绍、台温、金丽衢地区均属“浙东”地区）而得名。为“宋学”及明清学术中的显学之一，对近现代学术和海外学术，尤其是日本和东南亚影响很大。
