遥感影像上的森林植被信息主要是通过绿色植物叶子和植被冠层的光谱特性及其差异、变化而反映的，在不同的光谱波段植被有着不同的光谱信息。利用森林绿色植被在可见光的红光波段（Red）0.6～0.7微米有一个强烈的吸收带，而在近红外波段（NIR）0.7～1.10微米有一个较高的反射峰，选用这两个波段的数据进行加、减、乘、除等线性或非线性组合运算，会产生某些对森林植被长势、生物量等有一定指示意义的数值，这些数值就称为森林植被指数。
