对于纳米颗粒材料，当其尺寸小到与光波波长、磁相干长度或声子平均自由程等物理特征长度相当甚至更小时，导致材料在声、光、电、磁、热等方面出现新的有别于宏观状态下的物理性质的变化。一般的宏观物体尺寸总是有限的，但物理性质上并不表现出尺寸带来的影响。
