在应用假设检验进行判断时，不可避免会犯如下两种错误：零假设是对的，却拒绝了零假设（第一类错误）；相反，零假设是错的，却接受了零假设（第二类错误）。人们希望犯两类错误的概率都尽可能地小，但实际上做不到这一点，这就需要功效函数来说明。简单来讲，功效函数就是不犯第二类错误的概率，通常人们在做检验时，其策略是在控制住第一类错误（检验水平）的前提下，尽量让功效函数达到最大。
