以农产品生产、加工或流通为主业，通过合同、合作、股份合作等利益联结方式直接与农户紧密联系，使农产品生产、加工、销售有机结合、相互促进，并在规模和经营指标上达到一定标准的农业企业。是一个比喻性的称呼，即把农业产业化经营组织比作一个组织体系，在其中起到带领作用的企业，相当于这个组织体系的“龙头”。又称农业产业化龙头企业。
