在向下弯的相分离曲线上，临界点的温度就是上临界溶液温度（UCST）；在向上弯的相分离曲线上，临界点的温度就是下临界溶液温度（LCST）。如果高分子的分子量是单分散的，相分离曲线的最高点或最低点是临界点（critical point）。当温度高于上临界溶液温度时溶液不会发生相分离。当温度低于下临界溶液温度时溶液不会发生相分离。上临界溶液温度和下临界溶液温度与高分子的分子量有关，也随压力改变。
