中国古代南部民族名。狭义指先秦时建都会稽（今浙江绍兴），战国初一度强大争霸中原的越国及其部族。广义是对战国、秦、汉时期自交趾至于会稽七八千里的沿海地区（略当今苏、浙、闽、台、粤、桂六省区及越南北部）及其土著居民的泛称。这一地区为《禹贡》扬州之域，故又称“扬越”；因其居民“非一种”“各有种姓”，故又称“百越”。据其语言、习俗和地域的差异，秦汉时的越人依当时的称谓又可分为东瓯、闽越、南越、西瓯和雒越。
