20世纪末世界上发生的最严重的海难之一。爱沙尼亚籍滚装客船“爱沙尼亚”号，1994年9月28日凌晨1：15，在由爱沙尼亚的首都塔林驶往瑞典的首都斯德哥尔摩的航程中，船舶行驶至芬兰西南部水域时，船首罩脱落，船舶滚装桥（车辆跳板）打开，大量海水进入汽车舱，致使船舶丧失稳性。凌晨1：50，“爱沙尼亚”在芬兰西南部的波罗的海海域沉没。船上989人，旅客803人，其中852人丧生，仅幸存137人。
