潮湿条件下形成的具有厚泥炭层（有机质含量≥200克/千克）的土壤。中国土壤分类表（1950）中，列入隐域土纲水成土亚纲湿土土类,中国土壤分类表（暂拟，1954）中，列为沼泽土土类；中国第一次土壤普查（1961）中，列为下湿土土类、草炭土亚类；中国土壤分类暂行草案（1978）和全国第二次土壤普查分类（1988）中，列为水成土纲、泥炭土土类；在中国土壤系统分类（2001）中，相当于正常有机土；在美国土壤系统分类（1999）中，相当于有机土土纲；在世界土壤资源参比基础（2014）中，相当于有机土集合土类。
