在系统可靠性分析中，一般把研究对象分为部件和系统，部件是构成系统的基本单元，不可再分割。在不同时刻，部件和系统会呈现出不同状态，如正常状态或故障状态，可记为状态1或状态0。而在下一时刻，部件和系统会状态保持（状态1到状态1，或状态0到状态0）或状态变化（状态1到状态0，或状态0到状态1）。所谓单调关联系统，是指任一部件的状态变化必然导致系统的状态变化，且部件状态变化方向与系统状态变化方向始终保持一致（单调增或单调减）的系统。这里，当部件或系统状态由1变化为0时，称部件或系统状态变化方向为减，反之称状态变化方向为增。当某部件状态变化后，系统状态不变化时，称该部件为非关联部件。当存在某部件状态变化方向与系统状态变化方向不一致时，即该部件状态变化方向为增而系统状态变化方向为减，或该部件状态变化方向为减而系统状态变化方向为增时，称系统为非单调关联系统。
