以单细胞形式生活的生物。整个机体虽由一个细胞构成，但具有生命活动的全部生理功能，如摄食、代谢、呼吸、排泄、运动及生殖等。包括寄生在人体腔道、体液、组织或细胞内的致病及非致病性原虫，有40余种。有些原虫如疟原虫、利什曼原虫、锥虫、溶组织内阿米巴可以引起热带病，对人类造成严重危害；一些机会性致病原虫，如刚地弓形虫、隐孢子虫、蓝氏贾第鞭毛虫等，也日益受到重视。
