分子量从几千到几十万甚至几百万的化合物。简称高分子，在生命科学也称大分子。聚合物是以组成（或结构）重复单元通过共价键连接起来的线型长链为基本结构的高分子量化合物，通常由单体经聚合制得。组成（或结构）的重复单元数称为聚合度。当聚合度大时即聚合物的分子量很高和具有聚集态结构时，称为高聚物。一般地说，高分子、聚合物、高聚物表达的意义大致相同，可以互相替换使用。
