三维物体发出的光线包括了发光的强度、颜色、方向，并且在空间各个方向上的分布是连续的，人眼捕获其中的部分光线进行成像，产生视觉。如果我们不考虑人眼的视点位置，从物体的发光特性本身来考虑，构建具有一定光线密度的物体发光分布，即可以实现三维场景的显示，这种显示就称为光场显示。构建的光线集合就称为光场。
