依据法律的有关规定，运用专门的摄影技术和方法，以辨认为目的，对犯罪嫌疑人和尸体的体态特征、面貌特征、特殊特征进行记录，以及对于识别人身和尸体来源有重要意义的遗留物证进行拍照的专门照相方法。其中，体态特征主要是指人的整体结构与特征。面貌特征主要是指人的头面部特征。特殊特征主要是指生理特征（先天带来的或遗传的特征）和病理特征（外表性病变、外伤性伤痕表现出来的特征）。遗留物特征主要是指能反映人身或者尸体的各种物质和物品的特征。
