从现生物种来看，象类与长鼻目（Proboscidea）这两个概念是统一的，因为现生的长鼻目仅包含亚洲象和非洲象两属三种；然而考虑到种类繁多的长鼻目化石类群，如何定义象类就成为一个问题。这里采用P.塔西（P. Tassy）1988年基于分支系统学定义的象类（Elephantiformes，亚目一级），将恐象（Deinotherium）、莫湖兽（Moeritherium）、磷灰兽（Phosphatherium）、曙象（Eritherium）等类群排除在外。
