mitomycin C A methylazirinopyrroloindoledione antineoplastic antibiotic isolated from the bacterium Streptomyces caespitosus and other Streptomyces bacterial species. Bioreduced mitomycin C generates oxygen radicals, alkylates DNA, and produces interstrand DNA cross-links, thereby inhibiting DNA synthesis. Preferentially toxic to hypoxic cells, mitomycin C also inhibits RNA and protein synthesis at high concentrations. Check foractive clinical trials using this agent. or A drug used to treat advanced cancer of the stomach and pancreas that has not gotten better with other treatment. It is also being studied in the treatment of other types of cancer. Mitomycin C comes from bacteria. It damages the cell’s DNA and may kill cancer cells. It is a type of anticancer antibiotic.
